Five surprises of denominational church planting leaders

By Steve Pike, Founder of Urban Islands Project You’ve been a pastor for years, but now your denomination is asking you to leave your pastoral post and step into a full-time role of overseeing church planting for a region, the nation, or perhaps even the world. Here are some surprises you may experience as you make that transition: You won’t be referred to as “Pastor” anymore. As a leader in a local church, you’ve likely been called “Pastor” (or whatever the appropriate tribal ecclesiastical title is) for years. In your new role, you suddenly find yourself being referred to as “Mr.” or “Mrs.,” “Madam” or “Sir.,” etc. When you speak at a church, most of the time you will be speaking to a room full of strangers. Friends who were formerly your peers now tend to view you in a different vocational category and the longer you are not serving in a local church leadership role, the less “street cred” […]

The Better Together Formula

By Gary Rohrmayer, President of Church Multiplication Partners Disclaimer: Below is an example of a Vision Casting message I shared at the biennial gathering of Converge MidAmerica, a church starting and strengthening organization. This is part 3. I have been studying and preaching Paul’s prayers for the church. In them we find a great source of vision and encouragement for the church and the greater movement of God. Paul in the midst of his teachings on the strong and weaker brother offered this prayer as a conclusion. “May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 15:5-6 In this text we can see what I call the Better Together formula: Grit + Grace = Unity Let’s consider grit first. Many writers and speakers are lamenting over […]

The Empty Chair

By Ken Nabi, President & Executive Minister of Converge Great Lakes One of the challenges for a pastor is to keep his congregation mindful of the scores of lost all around them these days. It is so easy for the average churchgoer to get inoculated to the “lostness” of thousands of people who are far from God and living apart from His forgiveness and grace. When the majority of our people gather for corporate worship in a local church there are plenty of empty chairs all around them, and in the American consumerist mindset we like our space, so the empty space next to us is a convenient comfort. But, we need to turn this around and let the empty chair bother us. As a Pastor, I would periodically gather our people together to pray for a variety of issues in the community and our nation. We would often end these corporate prayer efforts by meeting in the sanctuary and […]

Courage is the Prerequisite for Unity

By Gary Rohrmayer, President of Church Multiplication Partners Disclaimer: Below is an example of a Vision Casting message I shared at the biennial gathering of Converge MidAmerica, a church starting and strengthening organization. This is part 2. In Lagrange, Ohio there was a wedding. Weddings are pivotal moments in the lives of all families, but for a blended family, it is often filled with joy, pain and at times even tension. Todd Cendrosky, the stepfather of the bride, found himself filled with mixed emotions wondering why, after investing 14 years in raising his stepdaughter, he had to sit in the crowd and not walk her down the aisle. Then the processional music began and the crowd was stunned to see Todd Bachman, the biological father of the bride, walking down the aisle alone without the bride. They watched him walk straight towards the bride’s stepfather, grabbing him and saying, ‘Hey, come with me. You’ve had just as big of a […]
