10 Essential Things Every Church Starter Needs to Know

By Steve Pike, Founder of Urban Islands Project

  1. Fervent, effectual, frequent prayer is a necessity, not an option.
  2. You are initiating a local expression of the Church that Jesus is building. Act accordingly.
  3. Acting accordingly means you make the formation of a community of disciples who make disciples your first priority. The weekly worship gathering is a part of the process of making disciples.
  4. Wherever you are forming disciples, God has already been at work there before you arrived. Respect God’s work and those He has already sent into the neighborhood.
  5. Develop a sound financial plan before you move into the neighborhood. Faith without works does not end well.
  6. Go be with the people of the community on their turf before you invite them to be on your turf.
  7. This is a marathon, not a sprint.
  8. Don’t go alone. Partner with a strong sending organization. Urban Islands Project exists to help sending organizations to optimize their strategies for the urban context. If you’re going urban, you need your sending organization AND Urban Islands Project.
  9. Connect with real-time peers serving in the same context. You’ll go further faster. Urban Islands Project can help you do this too!
  10. Listen to God and do what He says.
